How This Philippine GWA Calculator Works
This calculator uses the standard formula required by all Philippine colleges and universities:
GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units)
Each subject's final grade is multiplied by its credit units. All products are summed and divided by the total units enrolled. The result is your GWA for that semester.
Philippine grading scale reminder: Lower numbers are better. A 1.00 is perfect, 1.75 is the Cum Laude cutoff, and 5.00 is a failing grade. This is the opposite of the US GPA scale.
Semester GWA vs Cumulative GWA
Semester GWA covers only the current semester's subjects. Cumulative GWA covers your entire degree program — all subjects across all semesters. To compute your cumulative GWA, you cannot average semester GWAs. You must use all raw grades and units. See our full guide: How to Compute GWA in College →

Tips to Improve Your GWA in College Philippines
1. Focus on high-unit subjects first
A 5-unit subject affects your GWA five times more than a 1-unit subject. Prioritize getting high grades in your major subjects and lab-lecture pairs with the most credit units.
2. Never let a subject fall to 5.00
A failing grade (5.00) in even a 3-unit subject can drag down your GWA significantly. It's better to get a 3.00 (passing) than a 5.00 (fail) — even if both feel disappointing.
3. Compute your target GWA early
Use this calculator at the midterm to see what final grades you need to reach your target GWA. This way you know exactly which subjects need more effort in the second half of the semester.
4. Track cumulative GWA each semester
One weak semester can lower your cumulative GWA, but it can be recovered. Tracking it consistently helps you understand how much recovery is needed. See our cumulative GWA guide →
5. Understand your school's rounding policy
Some universities round GWA to 2 decimal places, others to 4. A GWA of 1.754 might round to 1.75 (Cum Laude) or 1.76 (not honored) depending on your school's policy. Always confirm with the registrar near graduation.

What grading scale do Philippine colleges use?
Most Philippine colleges use the 1.00–5.00 scale where 1.00 is the highest grade (equivalent to 99–100%) and 5.00 is failing. Lower numbers are better — the opposite of the US 4.0 GPA system.
Does this calculator work for UP, UST, FEU, NU, PUP?
Yes. This calculator works for all Philippine universities that use the standard 1.00–5.00 grading scale, including UP, UST, FEU, PUP, NU, PLM, Bicol University, and hundreds of other state and private colleges nationwide.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your grades, subjects, and results are never sent to any server, stored in any database, or shared with anyone. The calculator works even offline once the page loads.
What is a good GWA in the Philippines?
A GWA of 1.75 or lower is considered excellent and qualifies for Cum Laude honors. For Magna Cum Laude you need 1.45 or lower, and for Summa Cum Laude you need 1.20 or lower. Many scholarships require a GWA of 1.75 or better.
Can I use this calculator for senior high school GWA Philippines?
Senior high school in the Philippines typically uses percentage-based grades (75–100 scale) rather than the 1.00–5.00 college scale. You can still use this calculator — just enter your percentage grades and the same weighted average formula applies.
