How to Compute GWA
in College

The complete guide to computing your General Weighted Average — from the basic formula to semester GWA, cumulative GWA, and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick Answer — GWA Formula
GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units)
Multiply each subject's final grade by its credit units. Add all results. Divide by total units enrolled. That's your GWA.

How to Compute GWA in College — 5 Steps

Follow these five steps to compute your GWA accurately. This method is the standard used by all Philippine colleges and universities.

  • 1
List all your subjects for the semester
Write down every subject you are enrolled in. For each subject, note its credit units (typically 1–5) and your final grade (on the 1.00–5.00 scale).
Subject | Units | Final Grade
    Math | 3 | 1.75
    English | 3 | 2.00
    Science | 5 | 1.50
  • 2
Multiply each grade by its credit units
For every subject, compute: Grade × Units. This gives you the "weighted grade" for that subject.
    Math: 1.75 × 3 = 5.25
    English: 2.00 × 3 = 6.00
    Science: 1.50 × 5 = 7.50
  • 3
Add all the weighted grades (Σ Grade × Units)
Sum all the products you computed in Step 2. This is called the weighted sum.
    5.25 + 6.00 + 7.50 = 18.75
  • 4
Add all the credit units (Σ Units)
Sum all the credit units from all your subjects. This is your total units enrolled.
    3 + 3 + 5 = 11 total units
  • 5
Divide weighted sum by total units
Divide the weighted sum (Step 3) by the total units (Step 4). The result is your GWA.
    GWA = 18.75 ÷ 11 = 1.7045... ≈ 1.70
GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units) Applies to all Philippine colleges and universities on the 1.00–5.00 scale

Full Semester GWA Example

Tip: Most universities round GWA to 2 or 4 decimal places. Ask your registrar for the official rounding policy.

Cumulative GWA is computed across all semesters — not just one. You include every subject from your entire college program.

Key insight: Subjects with more units have a bigger impact on your cumulative GWA. A poor grade in a 5-unit subject hurts much more than in a 1-unit subject.

Different colleges use the same formula but may have different grading scales. Here is how GWA is computed using a percentage-based grade scale (common in some programs).

SubjectUnitsGrade (%)Grade × Units
Accounting 101388264
Business Math392276
Microeconomics385255

TOTAL141,255
GWA (percentage scale)
89.64%
1,255 ÷ 14 = 89.64 — With Honors at most schools
Important: The formula is the same regardless of scale. Always make sure all grades use the same scale before computing. Never mix 1.00–5.00 and percentage grades.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Mistake 1: Using a simple average instead of weighted average

Many students just add all grades and divide by the number of subjects. This gives the wrong result. A 5-unit subject must count more than a 1-unit subject. Always use credit units as weights.

❌ Mistake 2: Including INC or Dropped subjects

Subjects with an INC (Incomplete) grade or that were officially dropped from your enrollment are not included in the GWA computation until the grade is resolved. Check with your registrar for your school's exact policy.

❌ Mistake 3: Mixing grade scales

Never mix grades from a 1.00–5.00 scale with percentage grades in the same computation. Make sure every grade in your list uses the same scale.

❌ Mistake 4: Forgetting laboratory/PE units

Lab subjects and PE classes have credit units too — even if they're just 1 unit. They must be included in your GWA computation. Leaving them out gives an inaccurate result.

❌ Mistake 5: Computing GWA from semester GWAs (not raw data)

To get your cumulative GWA, you cannot just average your semester GWAs. You must use the raw weighted sums and total units across all semesters. Averaging semester GWAs gives a wrong answer unless all semesters had the same number of units.

Computing GWA at Specific Universities

The GWA formula is the same across all Philippine universities, but grading scales and policies differ. Here is a summary:

UniversityGrade ScaleHonors CutoffNotes
UP (University of the Philippines)1.0 – 5.01.45 (Magna) / 1.2 (Summa)Uses UWA (Unit Weighted Average)

Always verify with your school's registrar. Policies can change and vary by college/department within a university.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you compute GWA in college Philippines?
Use the formula: GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units). Multiply each subject's final grade by its credit units, sum all results, then divide by total credit units enrolled for the semester.
How to compute overall GWA in college?
Cumulative GWA uses all subjects taken across every semester. Add the weighted sums (Grade × Units) from all semesters, then divide by the total units across all semesters. Do not average semester GWAs.
How to compute GWA in college with 5 subjects?
Same formula — multiply each of the 5 grades by their respective units, sum all 5 products, and divide by the total units of all 5 subjects. The number of subjects does not change the method.
How to compute GWA in college Philippines step by step?
1) List subjects with units and grades. 2) Multiply grade × units for each. 3) Sum all grade × units products. 4) Sum all units. 5) Divide weighted sum by total units. Result is your GWA.
How to compute GWA if I have an INC grade?
Most universities do not include INC (Incomplete) grades in the GWA computation until the student completes the course requirements and a final grade is submitted. Check your school's registrar for the official policy.
How to compute GWA in college for latin honors?
Latin honors use your cumulative GWA across your entire degree program. Typical cutoffs: Cum Laude (1.46–1.75), Magna Cum Laude (1.21–1.45), Summa Cum Laude (1.00–1.20). Exact cutoffs vary by university.
